Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin predominantly exists on Ethereum, raising questions about XRP Ledger's adoption.
The Ripple USD (RLUSD) collateral/">stablecoin, designed to operate within Ripple's ecosystem, predominantly thrives on Ethereum. This phenomenon highlights the ongoing competition between Ripple's XRP Ledger and Ethereum, the leading vulnerability/">smart contract platform.
Current statistics reveal that a staggering $879 million of RLUSD’s total $1.63 billion supply circulates on Ethereum, dwarfing the $760 million residing on the XRP Ledger. This split underscores Ethereum's appeal, even as Ripple markets the digital asset as a centerpiece of its blockchain strategy.
Ripple introduced RLUSD in December 2024, aiming to enhance its competitive edge with impressive licensing credentials. The stablecoin boasts a license from the New York State Department of Financial Services, which is critical for gaining institutional and enterprise traction. However, Ripple faced challenges launching RLUSD solely on the XRP Ledger. This limitation led to the issuance of tokens across two blockchains, positioning XRP as the "home" chain, despite a greater supply residing on Ethereum.
Fast-forward to October 2025, and the numbers tell a clearer story: approximately 88% of RLUSD was on Ethereum, with only $91 million left on the XRPL. Even though Ethereum's dominance has decreased slightly, the platform still captured a compelling 81% share of RLUSD by the end of 2025, equating to around $1 billion.
Ethereum's robust decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem significantly contributes to the success of RLUSD. Ripple strategically allocated the stablecoin within Aave V3’s lending market around April 2025. This allowed RLUSD holders to earn yield on their deposits or leverage it for borrowing, secured against other Ethereum-based digital assets.
By late 2025, nearly two-thirds of RLUSD was deposited in Aave, marking it as a major asset in the platform’s institutional Horizon market. Other DeFi platforms, such as Curve and Morpho, also engaged RLUSD extensively, integrating hundreds of millions into their liquidity pools.
The transaction volumes further illustrate the stablecoin's vibrancy on Ethereum. Recorded transfer volumes reached an astonishing $18.4 billion in Q1 2026, predominantly occurring outside the XRP Ledger. This surge can be attributed to the wealthier, more extensive Ethereum community boasting larger liquidity pools, making RLUSD an attractive option for users.
Despite the substantial activity surrounding RLUSD on Ethereum, XRP, Ripple’s native token, captures minimal value from the stablecoin’s transactions. Each RLUSD transfer on the XRPL incurs a fee of a mere one hundred-thousandth of 1 XRP, valued at less than $0.0001. This fee structure raises questions about XRP's value proposition in the context of RLUSD transactions, as token holders receive negligible benefits from these settlements.
Ripple's CEO, Brad Garlinghouse, continues to argue that the future of finance will be multi-chain, a sentiment mirrored by the decision to utilize the Wormhole cross-blockchain bridge. This strategy allows RLUSD to seamlessly transition onto Ethereum layer-2 networks like Coinbase’s Base, further broadening its utility and reach.
Ripple’s approach towards RLUSD has been meticulous, emphasizing a blockchain-agnostic philosophy. The reserves backing RLUSD are held off-chain with the Bank of New York Mellon, which Ripple named the primary custodian in July 2025. This strategic partnership aids in building trust and stability for the stablecoin, enhancing its appeal.
As of the latest reports, XRP is traded at $1.27, reflecting a downturn of 31% since the start of 2026 and 41% over the past year. These statistics suggest that while Ripple's operational narrative seeks to promote XRP's enterprise-grade potential, the stablecoin with the largest share of liquidity resides primarily on Ethereum.
The narrative surrounding RLUSD showcases a shifting landscape where the expected home for Ripple's stablecoin is not only about direct affiliation with XRP Ledger but also about the practical advantages offered by Ethereum’s broader ecosystem.
The evident success of RLUSD on Ethereum raises pertinent questions about Ripple’s long-term strategy with the XRP Ledger. As the stablecoin continues to find utility and traction across various DeFi platforms, its dominance signals a necessity for Ripple to innovate and adapt to the evolving market landscape.
Moving forward, it will be essential for both Ripple and Ethereum to navigate this dynamic environment, with the potential for continued cross-pollination of assets and liquidity across platforms likely to reshape the future of digital finance.
