Bitcoin price under pressure this week as pivotal events approach

Bitcoin's price is currently navigating a crucial week, with two significant events looming that could dictate its trajectory. Traders are keeping a close eye on the upcoming May Personal Consumer Expenditures (PCE) inflation-data-raises-concerns-for-bitcoin-amid-fed-policies/">inflation report, set to be released on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. EDT, followed by the settlement of over $10 billion in Bitcoin options on Deribit the next morning.

As it stands, Bitcoin is trading around $62,500, suffering through a turbulent June that saw its value dip below the $60,000 threshold at one point. With the price fluctuating between $62,000 and $67,000, many are questioning whether the $60,000 support level can hold firm during this week’s events.

A hot PCE inflation backdrop

The PCE report, especially in the current economic climate, plays a pivotal role in shaping market sentiment. A surprise in the inflation print could unfold while billions in Bitcoin options are simultaneously settling, which typically amplifies price movements in the market.

The last PCE announcement gave the Federal Reserve space to maintain its current policy stance, revealing a headline inflation figure of 3.8% for April, nearly double the Fed's target of 2%. Core inflation held firm at 3.3%, its highest since October 2023.

The upcoming report is critical. It not only reflects consumer prices but also contextualizes them against rising producer prices that surged by 6.5% on a yearly basis, driven by escalating energy costs—an ongoing issue linked to global tensions, including those related to Iran.

Fed officials have already adjusted their expectations, holding rates steady during the last meeting on June 17 while simultaneously raising the year-end PCE forecast to 3.6% from 2.7%. This has drastically shifted market expectations; the likelihood of a rate cut in 2026 is dwindling, and expectations for a hike in December have skyrocketed to 85%.

Daily signals and market reactions

The interplay between inflation data and Bitcoin value is profound. Higher inflation can reset liquidity expectations, prompting mechanisms that likely raise real yields and the dollar, making traditional assets more appealing compared to Bitcoin, a non-yielding asset.

Institutional investment appears to be pulling back. Bitcoin funds saw a staggering $4.4 billion exit over a period of 13 trading days in late May and early June, signaling that traders are increasingly cautious. Data from Farside indicated that ETFs have lost around $2.27 billion in June alone through the 18th, largely attributed to BlackRock’s Bitcoin Investment Trust.

This limited inflow could hamper Bitcoin prices, as a consistent source of demand diminishes when the market needs buyers the most. If Thursday's PCE numbers are softer than expected, it could relieve some of the prevailing pressure, potentially reversing trends and offering a glimmer of hope for bullish traders.

The implications of options expiry

The options expiry occurring on Friday is the largest of the year. Approximately 80% of its open interest is currently out of the money after a substantial price drop in June. The max-pain level for Bitcoin rests near $74,000—around 15% above the current price—while the options data shows a $60,000 put as crucial downside support, juxtaposed against an $80,000 call as the barrier to upward movement.

This situation sets the scene for potential volatility. Dealers engaged in these options contracts will need to hedge their positions in Bitcoin spot and futures markets, creating a dynamic where the price could gravitate toward crowded strike levels or explode away if it breaks out of these constraints.

A hot inflation print could drive Bitcoin closer to the $60,000 put cluster, necessitating re-hedging by options dealers. Conversely, a softer reading may ignite a relief rally; however, significant ceiling levels still loom above the current price, which could limit any bounce-back before clearing of the options contracts.

What to expect in the coming days

The settlement on Friday at 08:00 UTC will undoubtedly have major implications. Any sharp price movements ahead of this window will blend into the price, setting the tone for the subsequent weekend. Once options clear, traders are likely to face reduced liquidity, which can further accelerate price movements.

The upcoming PCE report sets the macroeconomic context, while the Friday expiry will determine whether Bitcoin remains pinned down or accelerates into a new price bracket. This week concludes a heightened anticipation surrounding Bitcoin and its price, marking it as a critical moment in the ongoing narrative of the cryptocurrency.
